What is a Bond Yield?
Bond yield = annual return if bond held to maturity. Moves inversely to bond price. When demand rises → price up → yield down.
10-Year yield = global benchmark for growth, inflation & central bank policy expectations. US 10Y Treasury is the world's "risk-free rate."
Yield Curve = 10Y minus 2Y spread. Normal = upward slope. Inverted (2Y > 10Y) = recession signal — has preceded every US recession since 1960.
Spread (10Y−2Y): Positive = normal economy. Near zero = flat/uncertain. Negative = inverted = danger zone.
Stock market pressure
Higher discount rate compresses P/E ratios. Tech/growth stocks hit hardest. Defensive & value stocks relatively outperform. Bond prices fall.
Equity rally & bond gains
Lower discount rate boosts DCF values. Growth stocks re-rate sharply. REITs, infra, dividend stocks surge. Bond prices rise.
Currency & EM pressure
Capital flows to higher yield. USD strengthens. EM currencies (INR, BRL) weaken. Import costs rise. EM central banks forced to hike.
Classic recession signal
Banks borrow short, lend long — inversion crushes margins. Credit tightens. 100% track record preceding US recessions since 1960.
